After another shooting death on the Northside, Labour Senator for Dublin Bay North, Aodhán Ó Riordáin has said that the latest incident in Darndale must be a wake up call for the Minister for Justice who has refused to engage with him on Garda resources for the area.

Sen. Ó Ríordáin said:
“This morning’s shooting incident in Darndale shows once again that the Government is out of touch with the realities of life on the ground across the Northside. This latest killing must recieve the attention it deserves.

“Consistently I have raised through Seanad commencement debates the need for increased Garda resources on the Northside. Another life has now been lost.

“Sadly the Minister for Justice has refused to engage. Every debate results in the same answer – resources are a matter for the Garda Commissioner.

“Last week I was refused a debate on a pipe bomb incident in Edenmore on the basis that the Justice Minister ‘has no official responsibility in the matter’.

“However Ministerial interference is the re-opening of Stepaside Garda Station is being actively celebrated, despite being against the expressed wishes of the Assistant Garda Commissioner.

“Why is the Northside being ignored? These are no ordinary crimes and deserve the attention of the Minister for Justice. He can no longer ignore the escalation in serious crime.

“It is time to take on the escalating number of gun shootings by committing the resources to tackle this once and for all.

“Dismissing this incidents as being an operational matter for the Gardaí is insulting to the communities who need protection.”
