Mulvey-style initiative needed for North Dublin
Responding to yesterday’s successful Garda operation in relation to the feud in North Dublin, Labour’s Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has called for a Mulvey-style report to deal with gang violence in North Dublin.
Senator Ó Ríordáin said:
“I want to congratulate the Gardaí on the successful operation that took place in Artane yesterday.
“We could easily have been dealing with the aftermath of another murder this morning but thanks to the work of the specialist Emergency Response and Organised Crime Units, we have avoided that situation entirely.
“From what we know from yesterday’s Garda response and the weapons that were seized it is clear that situation is well out of control.
“What we absolutely do not need now is a round of back-slapping from Government. The time for photo ops is over. It is time for genuine evaluation of the root causes of this feud and potential solutions are needed.
“We know how much of a difference the Mulvey Report made to the North Inner City. Proper investment and respect for that process made a huge difference. We need to see a similar exercise across the Northside immediately.
“Labour’s successful campaign for a new Garda station in Dublin 17 is only the beginning of what is needed.
“A Northside Commission should involve all stakeholders especially schools, youth groups, Northside Partnership and other agencies.”
