Green light needed for purchase of additional InterCity rail carriages

26 September 2019

Labour spokesperson on Transport, Senator Kevin Humphreys, has called on Cabinet to urgently approve of the purchase of additional InterCity railcar carriages for Iaranród Éireann.

Senator Humphreys said:

“These InterCity railcar carriages are badly needed to combat chronic commuter overcrowding on trains in the greater Dublin area.

“We need an immediate Cabinet decision to allow Iarnród Éireann to push ahead with the purchase of at least 41 additional carriages to get to grips with the problem.

“This purchase has been in the pipeline for two years now but has still not been approved.

“If it does finally get the green light, these carriages could be up and running by 2022.

“We need to see urgent movement on this. Our commuters have been packed into carriages like sardines for too long.”
