Penrose concerned over possible job losses at Bórd na Móna

27 September 2019

Labour TD for Longford-Westmeath, Willie Penrose, has said every effort must be made to avoid job cuts at Bórd na Móna.

Deputy Penrose said:

“I’m extremely concerned to hear from the Group of Unions that management at Bórd na Móna has warned jobs may be on the line in the coming weeks if solutions can’t be found as part of the company’s transition to a green economy.

“These issues have been foreshadowed and there is an onus on Government to protect workers in the industry as we move away from a dependency on traditional fossil fuels.

“A just transition to a green economy means safeguarding workers with proper compensation packages and opportunities for retraining.

“A supervisory taskforce involving the unions is needed to implement this transition.

“We need to see action from management and the Government to find solutions, and prevent forced job losses in the coming months.”
