Indecision by Minister prolonging commuters’ misery

10 October 2019

Labour spokesperson on Transport, Senator Kevin Humphreys, has again called on Cabinet to urgently approve the purchase of additional railcar carriages for Irish Rail to deal with overcrowding on commuter trains in Dublin.

Senator Humphreys said:

“As I have been saying for some time now, we have a chronic situation of overcrowding on commuter trains in the greater Dublin area.

“Workers are cramming onto these trains like sardines at peak-hour while the Minister continues to sit on a decision regarding the purchase of at least 41 additional carriages.

“It is actually becoming a public health and safety issues at this stage.

“This purchase has been in the pipeline years now, and if it does finally get approval, the carriages could be up and running by 2022.

“We need to see movement on this immediately to get to grips with the overcrowding problem on our trains.”
