Answers needed on Leixlip Water Treatment Plant issues

04 November 2019

Labour Party by-election candidate Dublin Fingal, Duncan Smith, has called for urgent investment is needed to upgrade the Leixlip water treatment plant.

This comes as 600,000 homes in North County Dublin, Kildare and Meath have received their second boil water notice

Councillor Smith said:

“It is incredible that for the second time in less than two weeks people across North County Dublin are being put on a boil water notice due to recent heavy rainfall bringing contaminants into the system.

“Citizens across Fingal now need clarity from Irish Water on how long this boil water notice is expected to last, we cannot have a repeat of last week where people were kept in the dark.

“I can’t believe that we are back in this situation less than two weeks from when the first boil water notice came to a head. We need answers from Irish Water whether  this is to become a regular occurrence during bad weather this winter?

“We need to see real and urgent investment in the Leixlip water treatment plant. A resource such as this that is supposed to provide fresh, clean and healthy water to the Greater Dublin area needs to be invested in properly.

“In the mean time, Irish Water needs to lay out how it intends to remedy this situation in the short term, so people in Fingal and further afield are not left without water for a long period of time.”
