Delay and Indecision on housing for Glass Bottle site must be addressed

Labour Party leader Brendan Howlin joined Dublin Bay South candidate, Senator Kevin Humphreys, at the Glass Bottle site in Ringsend this morning, to highlight the failure of the Fine Gael Housing Minister to deliver on the 900 social and affordable homes out of 3,500 planned for the site in Poolbeg West that remains empty since the Fianna Fáil crash.

Senator Humphreys said:

“This is just a classic example of Fine Gael reneging on plans for social and affordable housing and failing to deliver on a vacant site that is the legacy of the Fianna Fáil crash.

“What we have here with the Glass Bottle site is a massive opportunity to build up to 900 social and affordable homes out of a planned 3,500 in the Poolbeg West SDZ that are so badly needed for local residents in the South Inner City.

“This agreement was made back in May 2017, but all we have seen from the Government and in Minister Murphy’s own backyard since then, is delay and indecision.

“When we should be seeing shovels in the ground, we still don’t even have planning permission for access to the site.

“We now need certainty and detail as to how the housing and rental model will work, what the cost of the units will be and how people will qualify.

“People are genuinely concerned that the Government has done a U-turn on plans for the site and that local residents will miss an opportunity of buying a home in their locality.”
