Emergency measures needed for renters

17 March 2020

Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal, Duncan Smith TD, has called for emergency legislation to bring in a rent freeze and a temporary ban on evictions.

Deputy Smith said:

“The Minister for Housing needs to urgently put in place emergency provisions to protect renters in the middle of this public health crisis.

“A rent freeze has been necessary for quite some time, but this issue has never been more pertinent than it is right now.

“Legislation to prevent landlords issuing a notice to quit or evicting tenants during this time is also necessary.

“The Minister for Housing needs to let renters know where they stand in the eye of this crisis. Many people are rightly worried that a loss of income at this time will lead to a loss of their home.

“We need to see emergency measures in place to ensure those who are renting feel secure as possible in their homes over the coming weeks and months.”
