Winter Fuel Allowance must be extended

28 March 2020

Labour TD for Dublin Fingal, Duncan Smith, has called for the fuel allowance payment to be extended for two additional weeks to include the Easter Weekend.

Deputy Smith wrote to Minister Doherty today asking for this extension, joining calls from other Labour representatives such as Cllr Dermot Lacey calling for this measure.

Deputy Smith said:

“It is imperative that the fuel allowance is extended for those who rely on this payment for an additional two weeks, including the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

“With the implementation of cocooning our older people will be feeling especially isolated and any measures the State can provide to comfort them and ensure they have enough resources to meet their heating and fuel requirements would be greatly appreciated.

“I have contacted Minister Doherty and officials in her Department asking for this extension to be made and relayed onto recipients as soon as possible.

“I understand the Government have been acting in the best possible faith for all our citizens during this crisis time. This request is made in that same spirit.”
