Labour Education spokesperson, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin T.D, has called on the Government to provide clarity regarding the status of practicals and project work in this year’s Leaving Cert.

Deputy Ó Ríordáin said:

“A lot of schools and students were expecting clarity on the status of the Leaving Cert practicals and project work following today’s stakeholder meeting, but didn’t get it.

“There are a number of subjects on the curriculum that include practical elements and project work, as well as interviews, such as engineering, construction studies and agricultural science.

“The Leaving Cert Applied course also includes practicals and interviews.

“I understand that this is complex, that every subject is different and that it’s not as easy a decision to make as it was with the Orals.

“However we need a roadmap as to when these decisions will be made and this clarity will be given.

“Again, this is a communication issue that the Department is falling down on, leaving an information vacuum for schools and students.”
