Shooting of Garda in Roscommon an attack on the community

Extending his sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of the Garda Detective shot in Roscommon last night, Labour Justice spokesperson Seán Sherlock said:

“I am shocked, and deeply saddened to hear this morning of the fatal shooting of a Detective in An Garda Síochána in the Castlrea area of Co. Roscommon last night. I want to extend my sympathy to his family and friends.

“This will be a huge shock to the local community and members of our police force. We stand in solidarity and sadness today with An Garda Síochána. In particular I am conscious of the profound trauma this will be to the his family members, and they are in our thoughts this morning.

“The shooting of a member of an Garda Síochána is an attack on the community and I condemn those involved in this act of murder.

“Every day and night, our Gardaí serve this country, sometimes at great risk to themselves and we should never forget the work they do on our behalf. The service provided by An Garda Síochána is a public service that is a cornerstone of our democracy, and the freedom they protect allows us to live our day to day lives.”
