Labour Leader Alan Kelly says that the public cannot be expected to wait for 5 days to hear from the Government about any potential additional Covid restrictions that may come into force before the new year.

Deputy Kelly said:

“The public and businesses need certainty on any additional restrictions on home visits and hospitality, the Taoiseach said are likely.

“The Taoiseach and Government need to clear this up as soon as possible. The public and businesses need certainty from Government about any potential additional restrictions on home visits and hospitality.

“The Taoiseach and the Government also needs to confirm that inter-county travel up until the 6th January will not be affected.

“Restrictions on inter county travel are due to be eased tomorrow. People have made plans to see their loved ones. They cannot be expected to wait in limbo until a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

“The Taoiseach should bring forward the cabinet meeting to tomorrow morning and announce any potential restrictions as soon as possible.

“The hospitality industry also need to know whether they will be able to remain open as intended for the New Year. Hotels, restaurants and pubs have taken bookings and many livelihoods depend on the busy Christmas period.

“The Chief Medical Officer said he gave the Taoiseach a date for additional restrictions to be imposed. The public cannot wait until Tuesday to hear that date.

“This is unacceptable, there are ads running on radio telling people to pre-book trains up to the 6th January and likewise from hotels and restaurants.

“Many families will have also planned to spend the new year with loved ones and need certainty in order to change their plans if necessary.
