Statement on death of George Nkencho

Labour Party Justice spokesperson Brendan Howlin TD said:
“The loss of a life is always a tragedy, and I express the condolences of the Labour Party to the family of Mr George Nkencho who was fatally shot by Gardaí on Wednesday. I am also mindful of those injured during the events leading up to that, and the impact on all those involved.

“An Garda Síochána prides itself on largely being an unarmed force where lethal force is used exceptionally and in the rarest of circumstances.

“The ongoing investigation by GSOC must be thorough and transparent so that all citizens and residents continue to have the highest level of trust and confidence in policing in Ireland.

“I join others in asking anyone with information or who may have witnessed any of the circumstances that led to this tragic outcome to make contact with GSOC.”
