International community must take strong action to reverse Myanmar coup

01 February 2021

Reacting to the situation in Myanmar, Labour Party spokesperson on foreign affairs, Brendan Howlin TD, has condemned the actions of the Myanmar military in once again overturning a legitimate election and illegally detaining elected officials.

Deputy Howlin said:

“The military action by the Myanmar army is unjustified and is a serious breach of international law. The international community must take the strongest possible actions to ensure that this coup is reversed and all detainees are released.

“Huge strides have been made toward the enshrining of democratic norms in Myanmar, and this unjustified action represents a threat to all in Myanmar. I am pleased to see President Biden’s strong condemnation of the coup, and commitment to the restoration of democratic will of the people.

“Democracy itself is under attack, as we hear reports of the military wrongly claiming it is a reaction to election fraud. Ireland should take a lead role in calling for coordinated international action in the United Nations and in the EU.”
