Sherlock describes sham redundancies at P&O Ferries as disgraceful and callous
Labour employment spokesperson Marie Sherlock has tonight (Thursday, 17th March) described the behaviour of the management at P&O Ferries as disgraceful and callous following the shock announcement of 800 job losses at the company.
Expressing solidarity with the workers Senator Sherlock said:
“It is absolutely disgraceful and callous that P&O Ferries would fire one fifth of their workforce over Zoom. We understand many of the workers made redundant are based in Britain but there are over 100 workers operating out of Larne port. We stand in solidarity with all the workers involved and their unions.”
“This is Irish Ferries mark 2. Back in 2005, Irish Ferries attempted the same stunt by firing 543 workers and attempting to replace them with low waged, non-unionised workers. That dispute brought tens of thousands of people on to the streets of Dublin in solidarity with the workers. I expect this shameful attempt to destroy good jobs will meet the same level of massive resistance.
This company has broken all attempts to implement fair industrial relations practices and unless they back up from this reprehensible approach we will support all solidarity actions seeking to put pressure on this rogue company.”
Tomorrow, there is a protest in Larne port and we urge solidarity with all RMT and Nautilus members.
