Sherlock welcomes appointment of new ICTU General Secretary
Labour spokesperson for workers’ rights, Marie Sherlock has today (Wednesday, 19th October) welcomed the appointment of Owen Reidy as the new General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) and paid tribute to outgoing ICTU General Secretary, Patricia King.
Senator Sherlock said:
“I had the privilege of working closely with Owen in SIPTU and was always deeply encouraged by his vision, leadership and steely determination to get the job done and lead workers through disputes. He assumes the role of ICTU General Secretary as a pivotal moment for the trade union movement in Ireland and we look forward to working with him and the wider trade union movement to get the recommendations of the high level report on collective bargaining implemented and EU directive on the Adequate Minimum Wages transposed into Irish law.
“We believe these measures combined have huge potential to strengthen collective bargaining rights, to reenergise our great movement and serve as a lasting legacy to outgoing General Secretary, Patricia King, a woman who has inspired generations of trade union women to get active in the movement.”
