Labour calls for urgent and independent inquiry into Blackrock College allegations
Labour justice spokesperson Aodhan Ó Ríordáin has today (Monday, 14th November) supported calls for an urgent and independent inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse by members of the Spiritans at Blackrock College.
Deputy Ó Ríordáin said:
“Like the majority of people, I was shocked, appalled and horrified listening to the harrowing stories of Mark and David Ryan. We need an urgent and independent inquiry into these allegations now. The hundreds of men making allegations of abuse against Irish priests from the Spiritans have suffered in sadness and silence for decades. It’s heartbreaking. As a society and a State, we must do all we can to support them, believe them and make sure we do all we can to ensure they get the justice they deserve.
He added: “The courage of these men speaking out after decades of what must have been physical, mental and emotional torture cannot be understated. We can only hope their bravery will encourage more people to come forward in an effort to right these horrible wrongs inflicted on them by the very people entrusted with their education and care.”
