15 December 2022

Labour defence spokesperson Mark Wall has extended his deep sympathies to the family of the deceased member of Óglaigh na hÉireann killed in Lebanon last night.

Speaking today Senator Wall said it is a cruel reminder of the risks taken by all members of Óglaigh na hÉireann on all peace keeping missions.

Senator Wall said:

“Every person in Ireland is deeply saddened to hear the news emerging from Lebanon last night. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and of those injured, and all of those currently serving on this peace keeping mission. It is difficult to imagine the pain and sense of loss they must be feeling at the moment.

“It is truly shocking news to hear of this horrific attack upon our courageous peacekeepers. The thoughts of every person in Ireland will be thinking of the family, friends and colleagues affected.

“This is the 48th member of the Defence Forces personnel who have lost their lives serving on peacekeeping missions. A full investigation is needed into this incident to ensure we are doing everything we can to keep peacekeepers safe. Today’s news is a sad reminder of the risks the Defence Forces face every day to keep people safe.”
