  • Minister need to expedite process and approve pension increases for 7,000 An Post pensioners

Seán Sherlock TD, Labour’s Social Protection Spokesperson, today called on the Government to urgently act on pension increases for An Post pensioners.

The scheme has been approved by the Labour Court, the An Post pensions board of trustees and An Post’s board of management. However, the Government has not yet approved the pension increases.

Deputy Sherlock, said:

“This is not a new issue for the Ministers involved. I raised this matter in June with Deputy Duncan Smith and still no movement from government. The delay in approving the An Post pension increases is unnecessary and unfair. These pensioners have worked hard and deserve to be properly rewarded.

“We echo the concerns of the Communications Workers Union and call on the Government to expedite the process and urgently act on the pension increases. This is a matter of fairness and justice for these pensioners.”

“The current process is unnecessarily bureaucratic and delays pensioners from receiving the money they are entitled to. Ministerial approval is the benchmark here. That is the yardstick. That is the point that we need to get to.”

“The Government needs to put in place a more streamlined process that will ensure that pensioners get the increases they are due as quickly as possible.”
