Students need support in Budget 2024
- Government must heed the calls from USI and take action to support students
Labour spokesperson on Higher Education, Senator Annie Hoey has today (Wednesday 4th October) said the escalating student accommodation crisis and the soaring cost-of-living for students must be addressed in Budget 2024
Senator Hoey:
“I stand in solidarity with the USI and support the pre-budget protest against the rising cost of living for students. The cost of student fees, accommodation, and transport are all spiralling out of control, and many students are struggling to make ends meet.
“The student accommodation crisis is as bad as ever. Many students are facing a year of torturous commutes as there is simply not enough space for people to live near campus. The absolute lack of affordable student accommodation is unacceptable and the reality is that now many students are forced to choose between paying rent or putting food on the table.
“Government must heed the calls from USI and take action to support students. This should include reducing student fees, implementing a bike-to-college scheme, and providing more funding for student services.
“Students are the future of our country, and we need to make sure that they have the support they need to succeed. The Government cannot afford to ignore the needs of students any longer.”
