€28 million spent on schools prefabs in 2022
- Nearly 500 schools relying on prefabs
- Same expenditure anticipated in 2023
Labour education spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has urged the Minister for Education tackle unsuitable learning environments like prefabs.
In response to parliamentary questions put down by the Labour Party, the Minister revealed that nearly 500 schools are still relying on prefabs.
Deputy Ó Ríordáin said:
“The reliance on prefab structures is not a new issue, but it remains unresolved. An incredible €28 million was spent on prefabs in 2022 alone, and the Government anticipates that this figure will be the same for this year.
“Currently there are 455 schools renting prefab accommodation, 323 primary schools and 132 post primary schools.
“A child’s school life should be paramount. No child should have to endure their education in a temporary structure, especially during the cold winter months. These prefabs are not a suitable learning environment, and they fail our children and teachers.
“The Government’s failure to expedite the completion of permanent school sites leaves students and educators uncertain about their learning environment. This uncertainty is unfair and detrimental to the quality of education our children deserve.”
