Labour demands Government intervention on arson attacks
- Growing arson attacks earmarked as accommodation centres for International Protection Applicants demands immediate action.
Labour’s Justice Spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin TD has written to the chair of the Justice Committee calling for urgent action on the worrying increase in alleged arson attacks targeting buildings earmarked as accommodation centres for International Protection Applicants.
Deputy Ó Riordáin said
“It is important at this juncture that the Justice Committee invite both the Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner for a discussion on this growing problem and the appropriate response to it and I have written to the Committee Chair regarding this.
“The growing number of alleged arson attacks is deeply concerning, as is the lack of arrests of those responsible. It is my view that the worrying rise in these attacks is not receiving the appropriate response from the political system or from An Garda Síochána.
“The safety and security of all individuals, including those seeking international protection, are paramount. We cannot allow these attacks to continue.
“I urge the Justice Committee to prioritise this matter and invite in both the Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner for a thorough discussion on the escalating situation and the measures needed to address it effectively.”
