Labour Senator and member of the Oireachtas Health Committee Annie Hoey has demanded that the former and current Minister for Health attend Committee next week to outline why cuts are being made on breast cancer supports.

Senator Hoey said:

“I was absolutely devastated listening to RTÉ’s Joe Duffy show yesterday as women bravely shared their experience of cancer, and the value of the supports that are now set to be cut.

“It is so meanspirited to make such a cut to women at a very vulnerable time in their life.

“The grant provided for post-mastectomy protheses is a crucial tool for women’s recovery. The decision to cut the grant flies in the face of all promises made by Fine Gael when they held the Ministry.

“In 2017, then Minster for Health Simon Harris promised that no cuts would be made to breast cancer patients. So where has this decision come from?

“I am calling on Minister Stephen Donnelly and former health minister Simon Harris to attend the Oireachtas health committee next week to outline why this cut has taken place.”
