Assisted Dying Legislation crucial for a compassionate country
- Government must promptly act on Assisted Dying Committee Report
Labour’s Senator Annie Hoey, who sat on the Oireachtas Committee for Assisted Dying, emphasised the urgency of the committee’s findings, published on Wednesday. She stressed the need for legislative action to address the complex issue of assisted dying in Ireland.
Senator Hoey said
“The Assisted Dying Committee Report reflects extensive deliberation and consultation, recognising the profound importance of ensuring dignity and compassion in end-of-life care.
When a loved one becomes sick with a serious illness and the end of their life is nearing, we want to do everything we can to ease their pain and suffering.
“I want to sincerely thank all of the witnesses to the Committee. We owe a debt of gratitude to the individuals who bravely shared their stories, enriching our understanding and guiding our recommendations.
“Today I’m remembering Vicky Phelan today who urged us as legislators to give people like her the option to be medically assisted to die.
“Government has a moral obligation to act on these recommendations without delay. This It is time for decisive action to honour the contributions of all witnesses and enact legislation that reflects compassion, dignity, and respect for individual choices.”
