Government must increase Housing Adaptation Grant immediately
Labour’s Senator Mark Wall has called on Government to urgently increase the Housing Adaptation Grant inline with current construction costs.
Senator Wall said
“The closure of the Housing Adaptation Grant in Kildare County is a glaring indication of the dire need for increased funding. The failure of the Housing Minister to address this issue is a dereliction of duty.
“With construction costs soaring and inflation rising, it’s unacceptable for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to neglect the affordability of adapting homes for older people and those with disabilities.
“I’ve been inundated with distressing stories from constituents desperate for home upgrades. From single-glazed windows to outdated heating systems, these are urgent necessities to enable people to age in place.
“We know from parliamentary questions that there is a review of the scheme gathering dust on the Minister for Housing’s desk. Government must prioritise increasing the grant to meet current demands.
“Housing adaptation Grants are not ‘lifestyle choice’; it’s a basic necessity for older people and those with disabilities. The government’s neglect is hindering their ability to stay in their own home. It’s time for action. Government must immediately increase funding for the Housing Adaptation Grant Scheme to ensure the dignity and independence of our most vulnerable citizens.”
