Eir staff pushed into impossible position
Labour’s Communications Spokesperson Duncan Smith TD has strongly condemned telecoms company Eir for its mistreatment of staff, following revelations from the court hearing regarding the company’s policies on customer complaints. The court heard evidence that Eir warned employees they could face disciplinary action for adhering to statutory regulations governing customer complaints.
Deputy Smith said,
“Eir’s treatment of its staff is completely unacceptable. No employee should ever be put in this position and facing disciplinary action from their employer.
“Having worked in a call centre myself, I understand firsthand the challenges and pressures faced by workers in these roles. It is already a highly demanding job, and to add the burden of potentially facing disciplinary action for simply doing what is required is unacceptable. I encourage all workers to join a union for better pay, benefits and working conditions.
“Eir must apologise to its staff for putting them in such an incredibly difficult position. Additionally, we cannot allow corporations to trample on the rights of consumers. I’m calling on the Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications to summon Eir to explain its actions and breaches of the law, including its failure to acknowledge customer complaints and provide responses within the mandated time frame of 10 working days. It is imperative eir is held to account.”
