Teachers are the linchpin of our society and our economy – Feeney

10 November 2024

Speaking at the Labour Party candidate launch today, Labour General Election candidate for Kildare North Cllr Angela Feeney called on all Government parties to distance themselves from comments made about teachers at a Fine Gael event.

Cllr Feeney said:

“As someone who has worked in education my whole life, I am disgusted by the comments made by Michael O’Leary.

“Teachers play such a formative role for all of us. As educators, they are the linchpin of our society and our economy. Ireland’s skilled and educated workforce is down to the commitment of our teachers.

“At a time of crisis in our teaching sector, with 951 vacancies in primary and special schools alone, we should be doing everything we can to support and encourage people in the teaching profession, not sneer at them.

“To hear a public figure like Michael O’Leary make these comments when we have a huge shortage of teachers is disgraceful. Does this Government agree with him?”
