RTÉ’s failure to hold televised climate debate unreal – Nash
Speaking at the launch of Labour’s finance plans, Labour finance spokesperson Ged Nash called out RTÉ’s failure to host televised debates on climate change.
Deputy Nash urged the broadcaster to rethink its approach and ensure that climate issues are debated thoroughly during General Election 2024.
Deputy Nash said:
“The climate crisis should be the primary frame through which we consider all issues over the course of this short election campaign.
“Our national broadcaster should be giving the climate crisis the attention it demands. People deserve to know what each party plans to do to stem this people crisis, and to see climate deniers and the purveyors of simple solutions in the Dáil held to scrutiny.
“With our planet heating at a rate faster than at any time in the geological record, it’s hard to conceive of a greater threat facing global society and the economy.
“Trump’s victory in America will herald the advent of an even more pressing climate catastrophe, if we are to anticipate the irresponsible and irreversible policies he set out over the course of his campaign.
“While we understand that climate issues will be debated over the course of the campaign, the scale of the challenge and the enormity of the opportunity for our country when it comes to climate demands the same focus as issues like health, housing and the cost of living.
“The horrifying scenes in Valencia just two weeks ago provide a reminder to us all of just how pressing protecting our planet is.”
