Time for Change: Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have failed young people

  • Seven in ten young people want out

Labour’s general election candidate for Cork South Central, Councillor Laura Harmon, has condemned the Government’s failure to deliver for young people following the publication of a National Youth Council of Ireland survey. The survey reveals that 7 out of 10 people aged 18-24 believe they would have a better quality of life outside Ireland, this comes just 12 days out from the general election.

Councillor Harmon said:

“This is a deeply personal issue for me. Three out of my four sisters have left Ireland because of the housing crisis and the spiralling cost of living. The Government has turned its back on young people, leaving them with no choice but to seek opportunities abroad.

“Rent is so high that even with tax cuts and rent credits, many are unable to afford a place to live. Young people are stuck in childhood bedrooms or desperately searching for rentals that don’t exist. It’s no wonder so many feel like they can’t see a future here.

“The housing crisis didn’t happen overnight—it’s the result of years of inaction, failed policies, and prioritising developers over renters. Young people deserve better, and Labour is committed to making housing a priority with real investment in affordable homes and stronger protections for renters.

“This survey is a wake-up call. The Government has failed an entire generation. We cannot let Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael stay in power and continue this devastating cycle of neglect. Labour will tackle the housing crisis head-on and ensure young people have access to secure, affordable homes. We will prioritise policies that bring fairness to renters and buyers alike, because young people deserve a real stake in Ireland’s future.

“With the general election just days away, I urge every young person to get out and vote. Your voice matters, and this is your chance to demand change. The power to make that change is in your hands.”
