Labour welcomes Working Time Directive for Defence Forces

  • Long overdue protections now in place

Labour’s Mark Wall TD has welcomed the long-overdue implementation of the Working Time Directive for Defence Forces personnel, ensuring they now enjoy the same protections as workers in other sectors under the Organisation of Working Time Act, 1997. Deputy Wall said:

“This landmark move establishes statutory rights for members of the Defence Forces in respect of daily breaks, weekly rest, maximum working hours, and annual leave. For far too long, members of our Defence Forces have been denied the basic protections that workers in other sectors take for granted. The implementation of the Working Time Directive brings long-awaited justice and fairness to the brave men and women who serve this country.

“It is only through the persistent campaigning of PDFORRA and RACO that this has finally been achieved. I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to them for their tireless efforts in getting this over the line.

“These measures ensure that Defence Forces personnel have adequate rest and recovery time, something that is crucial for their health and well-being. It is shameful that it took so long to reach this point.

“The implementation of this Directive was a cornerstone of our Labour Party General Election Manifesto and our Defence Policy. This outcome should make the Government reflect on its track record of neglecting the Defence Forces. The Labour Party will continue to fight for conditions for these essential workers. Our Defence Forces deserve nothing less than fair treatment and proper support.”
