Shameful row back on workplace progress must be stopped
Labour’s Marie Sherlock TD has called on the newly appointed Enterprise Minister to intervene in the proposed changes to civil servants working practices.
Deputy Sherlock said:
“There are two issues here: one, the somewhat unilateral decision to change workers terms and two, the decision to row back on progress in the workplace.
“The public sector should be a leader in encouraging remote and flexible work practices where practical. Forsa must be commended for its immediate engagement and communication with its members. The value of union membership can never be understated.
“In a week where we saw really regressive steps taken in the US on this matter, more than ever we should be working to make work more accessible.
“A survey from Indeed this week showed that the overall share of remote and hybrid role on its platform was at more than 17%. There is an appetite out there from works to build on the productivity gains that remote and flexible work has introduced.
“Flexible work is about economic growth, fairness and ensuring workers can thrive in modern Ireland. As our economy evolves over the coming years, it’s crucial that Ireland remains competitive in terms of our rights for working people.
“Strong remote and flexible work rights will be vital for businesses in terms of attracting and retaining talent, as well as supporting regional development across the country.
“Labour fought hard to ensure that every worker had a right to flexible work. We need to see Government intervene and protect the progress made in the world of work.”
