Where is the plan for Dublin safety?
• Dublin’s safety concerns ignore
Labour’s Dublin Spokesperson Aodhán Ó Ríordáin MEP has said the fatal stabbing of a man in Dublin city centre is a devastating reminder of how much the capital has changed—and not for the better. Despite Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil’s promises before the election, there is still no urgency in tackling crime, vacancy, and dereliction in Dublin.
Aodhán Ó Ríordáin said:
“The news of the incident on the streets of Dublin in the early hours of this morning is absolutely heartbreaking. First and foremost, my thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones. But we cannot ignore what this means for our city. People no longer feel safe in Dublin. Workers, visitors, and residents deserve better.
“Before the election, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil made a big show of the publication of Dublin City Taskforce report. They claimed to have a plan to tackle crime, dereliction, and anti-social behaviour. But where is the implementation report? Where is the follow-through? Promises mean nothing if they don’t translate into action.
“We know the scale of vacancy and dereliction in Dublin city centre. Labour has consistently called for a serious, long-term plan to bring these spaces back into use, creating a city that feels safe, welcoming, and vibrant. But instead, Dublin is being left behind because of the political vacuum at the heart of decision-making.
“Cities compete for investment, talent, visitors, and attractions—but what vision do Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have for Dublin? None. Their failure to act means businesses are struggling and communities feel abandoned.
“We need real action now. That means more visible policing to restore public confidence. It means tackling vacancy and dereliction to create a city people want to live in and visit. It means leadership, not more empty promises.
“The Government must stop dragging its feet and implement the Dublin City Taskforce recommendations now. How many more tragic incidents will it take before they act?”
