Shed solution treating a gaping wound with a plaster – Sheehan

Labour’s housing spokesperson Conor Sheehan said the policy plaster announced this morning amounts to a headline grab rather than tackling the root causes of the housing disaster.

Deputy Sheehan said:

“Today’s announcement is an admission of failure in delivering real housing solutions. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have clearly thrown in the towel on housing before they’ve even gotten in the ring.

“It is reminiscent of the out of touch co-living proposals Fine Gael stood over in the past. Are working adults who live at home with their parents supposed to now be excited about living in the shed at the bottom of the garden?

“Any young person stuck in their box bedroom who reads that they’re about to get evicted to the shed will shake their head in despair. The proposal to move working adults from the inside into the wooden shed at the end of the garden is like something from a dystopian movie.

“Without stating the obvious, garden sheds, no matter how well designed, are not a long-term substitute for proper housing, affordable housing, supply of rental homes or the financial barriers to homeownership.

“Rather than promoting independence, this Government is aiming to further entrench intergenerational dependency. The Taoiseach is enjoying taking pot shots at the Opposition on housing, yet it is now clear that under this Government’s plans the housing crisis will only deepen.”
