Derelict Iveagh Markets require renewed sense of urgency from the State

  • Smithfield Market redevelopment shows what’s possible

Labour’s Councillor Darragh Moriarty has welcomed the approval of a €30 million loan by Dublin City Council to redevelop Smithfield Fruit and Vegetable Market.

Councillor Moriarty said:

“I wholeheartedly welcome the progress made on the Smithfield Fruit and Vegetable Market. It is a prime example of how the Council can breathe new life into historic areas of the city. The red brick market building, located on Mary’s Lane between Capel Street and Smithfield, has been left largely vacant for years, but this redevelopment will see it transformed into a hub for local food retailers and restaurateurs.

“The approval of this €30 million loan is a fantastic step forward for Dublin’s inner city. This historic building, in the heart of the city, has been left idle for far too long. Now, we have a clear example of how Dublin City Council can enhance the city’s heritage while creating a space that will support local businesses and revitalise the area.

“Unfortunately, just a stone’s throw away in my own local area, the Iveagh Markets remains in a state of dereliction. Unlike Smithfield, this historic building—full of potential—is still tied up in legal red tape. The building has been unused for decades, despite having all the ingredients to become a thriving hub for food, culture, and enterprise.

“In a recent question to the Chief Executive of Dublin City Council, I was disappointed to receive confirmation that the Iveagh Markets remains caught in legal limbo. We know what a game changer this redevelopment would be for the Liberties and Francis Street. A fully restored and functional Iveagh Markets would not only bring new life to the area but also serve as a key driver of footfall, tourism, and local business.

“We need to see the same level of ambition for the Iveagh Markets as we are now seeing for Smithfield. There is no reason why we cannot deliver a bold, transformative vision for the Iveagh Markets, just as we are now doing with Smithfield. I’m calling on Dublin City Council to push for urgent legal resolution and a clear plan for the building’s future. Let’s take back the Iveagh Markets and bring it back to life.”
