Minister must crack down and crack on with Cork flood relief plan

28 March 2025

Labour Senator Laura Harmon said the failure of successive Governments to deliver the Cork flood relief that is so desperately needed must be addressed, with a close eye on ensuring value for money.

Senator Harmon said:

“Reporting in the Journal today of the massive moneys spent on the Cork flood defence scheme are quite alarming. It’s disappointing to see yet another example of overspend by the OPW, particularly given the enormous sums spent before any construction has commenced.

“Unfortunately, this project has been marked by a distinct failure to provide progress reports to elected representatives and the general public.

“We need to see investment in flood relief for Cork but we need to be able to trust that public funds are being managed efficiently.

“We know that there will be increased flooding due to climate chaos so we absolute need to see the best flood relief plan for Cork but it’s vital that the public have faith in the process and that it’s delivered in a timely manner.

“Residents and businesses across Cork City and near where I live in Glasheen and the Douglas Street area are frustrated with the lack of support they receive in relation to flood preparedness.

“These people have experienced shocking floods over recent winters with so many schools, businesses and many community and sports groups desperately impacted.

“We need to see the best flood protection for Cork which also maintains the aesthetic of the City. This can be and should be done both on time and on budget. We know that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have a very poor track record on delivering public infrastructure projects on time and on cost, so I do hope that the new Minister will be able to grasp the nettle once and for all.”
