Labour demands immediate action to bolster Ireland’s tourism sector - The Labour Party

Labour’s spokesperson on tourism, George Lawlor TD, has expressed deep concern over new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) revealing a 30% decrease in foreign visitors to Ireland in February 2025 compared to the same month last year. This significant decline underscores the urgent need for government intervention to support the tourism industry amid global uncertainties.

Deputy Lawlor said:

“The latest CSO statistics are alarming. A 30% drop in foreign visitors is not just a number—it represents a blow to the economy, particularly in rural areas where tourism is a vital source of employment and income. In my own constituency of Wexford, such a decline could have devastating effects on local businesses and communities that rely heavily on tourism.

“The global landscape is fraught with challenges, from the economic repercussions of Trump’s tariffs to broader international economic uncertainties. These factors are beyond our control, but how we respond domestically is within our power. The government must act decisively to mitigate these external pressures by bolstering our tourism sector.

“Firstly, increased funding for Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland is essential. These organisations play a crucial role in promoting Ireland as a destination and supporting local tourism initiatives. Enhanced resources will enable them to implement more robust strategies can attract visitors despite global challenges.

“Secondly, collaboration with local councils is imperative to develop and implement tailored tourism strategies that leverage the unique attractions of each region. Local authorities are best positioned to identify opportunities and address specific challenges. A coordinated approach between national bodies and local councils can foster innovation and drive tourism growth at the community level.

“I’m calling on Government to prioritise the tourism sector in its economic strategy, ensuring it is not overshadowed amid responses to international trade disputes and economic uncertainties. By investing in our tourism infrastructure and marketing, and by empowering local communities through strategic support, we can support this critical industry and safeguard the jobs and prosperity it brings to our nation.”
