Senator Harmon calls out Government’s U-Turn on education funding - The Labour Party

Labour’s Further and Higher Education Spokesperson, Senator Laura Harmon, has criticised the Government’s reported plans to increase third-level student fees, accusing Fine Gael of reneging on their election commitment.

Senator Harmon said:
“During the election campaign, Simon Harris said that “third level education fees will need to be phased out in the coming years” to allow for the total abolition of third-level college contribution fees. Yet, mere months later, we hear reports of plans to increase these fees. This not only betrays the trust of students and their families but also undermines the principle of accessible education for all.
“Three years ago, student fees were reduced from €3,000 to €2,000, a move that alleviated financial pressure on many households. Reversing this progress by increasing fees now is a regressive step that will exacerbate the financial strain on students already grappling with the rising cost of living, rents and persistent inflation.

“While investment in student accommodation and course expansion is essential, we must not lose sight of the pressing need to make education accessible and affordable for all. Higher education today is as critical as the Leaving Certificate was in the 1980s. We need a ‘Niamh Bhreathnach’ moment—a bold initiative to abolish student fees, as was achieved in the 1990s. Ensuring that higher education is within reach for everyone will ultimately benefit our society and economy.

“Education is our greatest tool for creating a more equal and prosperous Ireland. The cost should not be a barrier for any child to reach their potential. The Government must reaffirm its commitment to reducing student fees and invest adequately in our education system to secure a brighter future for all.”
