This World Autism Day, let’s make every community autism friendly
Labour children’s spokesperson Deputy Mark Wall has called on all local authorities to work to become autism friendly.
Marking World Autism Day (tomorrow, April 2nd 2025), Deputy Wall said creating autism-friendly spaces is just one of the measures that must be progressed to have the rights of neurodivergent people realised.
Deputy Wall said:
“Many neurodivergent people and their families encounter barriers when trying to access public spaces – whether due to sensory problems, lack of quiet zones, or inaccessible facilities.
“On World Autism Day, Labour is calling for action to ensure our towns, cities, and villages meet their needs, and that starts with listening to neurodivergent people about the changes that matter most to them.
“Our public spaces must be inclusive to the greatest extent possible and we shouldn’t have to wait for piecemeal progress. Funding should be allocated to local authorities for the necessary changes, including sensory-friendly areas, clear signage, and training for staff working in public spaces. These changes need to be implemented in consultation with the neurodivergent community, ensuring that the solutions address their lived experiences and specific needs.
“There are excellent examples of autism-friendly initiatives across Ireland, but we need to see more towns and villages following suit. Becoming an autism-friendly community requires all sectors of society to come together.
“Businesses can play their part by implementing small but significant changes, like offering quiet shopping hours or staff training. Schools and community groups can lead by promoting understanding and awareness. By working together, we can ensure that Ireland becomes a place that truly includes everyone.”
