New housing plan needed as housing deficit grows - The Labour Party

Responding to the March Housing Commencement data, Labour housing spokesperson Conor Sheehan TD said meaningful action is needed from Government when it comes to addressing the housing crisis.

Deputy Sheehan said:

“The scale of the housing crisis is well documented but March’s commencement data shows that the chickens are coming home to roost for the Government on housing.

“It’s clear that the Government used the development levy and water waiver to give its housing data momentum before the election. These artificially inflated numbers utterly misled the public and ultimately reveal a Government flailing in dealing with the crisis.

“This desperate spin has now been taken up by the new Minister Browne and we’ve had nothing but kite flying from Fianna Fáil on the biggest issue of our time.

“All the while, house prices continue to rise and renters continue to face enormous difficulties finding an affordable place to live.

“Housing for All has failed. There’s a broad acceptance of this point by many in the industry, and many members of this Government.

“I am calling on Minister Browne to bring forward a new housing plan sooner rather than later. One that takes into account the report of the Housing Commission, as well as the global uncertainty facing the economy.

“My concern is if the housing deficit continues to widen, the Government will be unable to close it.”
