Duncan Smith expresses Labour’s sympathy on death of the pope - The Labour Party

Labour’s foreign affairs spokesperson Duncan Smith TD today has expressed his condolences on the death of Pope Francis.

Deputy Smith said:

“On behalf of the Labour Party I wish to offer my sympathy and regret on the death of Pope Francis, and condolences to Catholics in Ireland and all over the world.

“His passing at Easter time will have added poignancy for so many Catholics but his visit to Ireland in 2018 was a moment of significance and reflected modern Ireland’s relationship with the Catholic Church.

“He will be remembered as a strong opponent of war, a powerful advocate for the world’s poor, as well as being the first Pope to call for the global decriminalisation of same-sex relationships.

“A more detailed examination of Pope Francis’ time as head of the Catholic Church will take place in the coming days and weeks. Today we mark his passing and send our sympathies to Catholics who will be mourning all over the world.

“His papacy had a consistent global anti-poverty message which in a world that is increasingly unequal and divided, has a more significant resonance now more than ever.”
