Education Minister speaking out of both sides of her mouth on special education - The Labour Party

Labour education spokesperson Eoghan Kenny said Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are failing children across the State by failing to provide adequate special school places.

Following a Labour Party motion in the Dáil today, Deputy Kenny said the Minster has shown her true colours when it comes to special education.

Deputy Kenny said:

“I’m very disappointed for the hundreds of families across the country who still don’t know where their child will be attending school in September. Many of these parents joined the Labour Party today in the gallery of the Dáil to watch the debate on special education.

“The Minister’s comments on the floor of the Dáil were deeply disappointing, and a slap in the face to the thousands of children across the country waiting on assessments of needs.

“Instead of supporting the Labour motion which the Minister said she agrees with, Government instead put forward a counter-motion to effectively pat themselves on the back.

“The Minister has shown her true colours on this issue. There is a clear lack of understanding with this Government when it comes to special education needs.

“Rather than addressing the growing need for special education places, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have a habit of trying to paper over cracks at the eleventh hour.

“From today’s debate it’s clear to me that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael simply do not understand the extent of the issues that are coming to our offices every single day of the week. Children across the State are being failed by Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil.”
