Statement from Duncan Smith on election of Pope Leo XIV - The Labour Party
Labour’s foreign affairs spokesperson Duncan Smith TD said:
“The election of a new Pope is a deeply significant time for the many practicing Roman Catholics in Ireland and across the world.
“The Catholic church has a global community of 1.4bn people and the place of the Church cannot be overlooked. The international interest in watching the election unfold tells this story in and of itself.
“There is much hope that Pope Leo XIV will lead the Church with courage and compassion and he must continue to work for peace on Earth.
“In a world that has become increasingly polarised, the election of a new Pope offers a reminder that we are stronger when we work together.”
