Smith calls on Taoiseach to put date on enactment of Occupied Territories Bill - The Labour Party

Labour whip and foreign affairs spokesperson Duncan Smith TD has called on the Taoiseach to set out an exact time frame for the enactment of the Occupied Territories Bill.

In response to Smith’s questioning in the Dáil, the Taoiseach and his Government failed to provide a clear timeline to the introduction of this vital piece of legislation.

Deputy Smith said:

“During televised election debates in November 2024, the now Taoiseach and Tánaiste committed to enacting the Occupied Territories Bill. To date, we’ve yet to see any legislation progressed by this Government.

“Since November 2024, almost 10,000 people have lost their lives due to the horrors waged on Gaza by Israel.

“The world is watching in horror as Israel flattens a people. The suffering in Gaza is unconscionable and words are no substitute for action. Israel must internationally isolated with trade being a key part in this.

“Today, the UN is warning that 14,000 babies could die in Gaza in the next 48 hours without aid. I am once again calling on this Government to enact the will of the Irish people, enact the Occupied Territories Bill, and play our role in the international condemnation of Israel’s genocide on Gaza.”
