- Kneecap terrorism charges are political
Labour TD Conor Sheehan called on the Tánaiste to raise the political terrorism charges against Kneecap with the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary of the UK.
Questioning the Tánaiste in the Dáil, Deputy Sheehan said:
“I abhor Hamas and Hezbollah and their vile actions but yesterday we saw a member of the rap group Kneecap charged with terrorism offences by the Metropolitan Police.
“These charges are political and seek to silence those who are willing to call out the genocide in Gaza.
“This is the very same state that has sent over 14 shipments of arms to Israel amounting to £127.6 million in military equipment in 2024.
“In a week where 14,000 Gazan babies are likely to starve to death. Artists have long used their voices to call out injustice when they see it. This attempt to silence campaigners against violence and genocide is outrageous.
“Kneecap were charged under terrorism legislation that that the British state has been very selective in applying.
“I’ve asked the Tánaiste to raise this matter with the Prime Minister and his Foreign Secretary as an urgent matter. Time would be much better spent taking Israel to task than pointless political prosecutions.”
