Leaving Cert reform doomed to fail without teachers’ support - The Labour Party

Labour eduction spokesperson Eoghan Kenny TD has called on the Minister for Education to pause the pace of Leaving Cert reforms.

Deputy Kenny said:

“The pace of change pursued by the Minister is dividing teachers to the detriment of our students. The groundwork needed to make these changes impactful, has simply not been completed and the Minister is burying her head in the sand.

“Poorly implemented reforms won’t benefit anyone and it’s clear from ballots taken by teaching unions that the consensus for change is not there just yet.

“The rushed nature of this reform means that the ink is barely dry on the syllabus before the teachers are expected to roll it out in the classroom. It’s not going to work.

“As a teacher, I know this only too well. Teachers are being asked to deliver new syllabi with as little as one day of training. It’s unfair on the teachers, and it’s unfair on the students.

“I don’t think this Government get it. Change is good, change is needed, but unless Government can bring everyone together, it is doomed to fail.”
