- Government inertia as Dublin’s litter problem is worsening
- Nine months on Dublin Task force recommendations and there is no progress.
Labour’s TD in Dublin Central, Deputy Marie Sherlock, has called out Government inaction following the latest Irish Business Against Litter survey which shows that conditions in Dublin city centre are “in reverse”. Nine months on from the much-publicised Dublin City Task Force, there has been nothing but empty promises.
Deputy Sherlock said:
“Today’s IBAL report is frustratingly predictable. Last year, the then Taoiseach admitted that waste processes had to change and there was a clear recommendation from the Dublin Task Force. Nine months later, we see no progress while our city’s streets deteriorate.
“The reality is that there is dysfunctional waste collection system in Dublin. private waste companies can drive by littered streets and illegally dumped bags. Dublin city council is left to clean up the mess and overall there is an underinvestment in how waste is managed in the city.
“People in the North Inner City are rightly fed up and feel duped by pre election promises. Ireland needs a waste management system that actually works for people and the planet. That means prioritising sustainability, affordability and accountability. We urgently need comprehensive reform of how waste is collected and processed. That means legislating for landlord accountability and crucially reforming who collect and how waste is managed.
“Dublin deserves clean streets, fair charges and a system that encourages proper waste separation and recycling. The current patchwork approach is failing. Government must step up, take responsibility and deliver the changes that have been promised time and time again.
“It’s time for leadership and action. Labour is calling on the Government to urgently outline its plans for waste management reform. The time for excuses is over – we need real change now.”
