Labour submits emergency amendments to Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Bill 2025 - The Labour Party
- Labour amendments would:
- Introduce a 2 year rent freeze
- Ban no fault evictions
- Provide for fines of up to €100,000 for landlords breaking the law
The Labour Party has this evening submitted emergency amendments to the hastily cobbled together Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill 2025.
If accepted, these amendments would provide for a real safety net for renters including a rent freeze, a ban on no fault evictions and substantial fines for rogue landlords.
Deputy Sheehan said:
“The definition of madness is doing the same thing and expecting different results. To date, this Government has ploughed on with the same failed and stale investor led approach to housing which is seeing renters face into an even more uncertain market than two weeks ago.
“Tomorrow the Dáil will debate the much needed legislation to designate the entire country a Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) – something Labour has long campaigned for. The fact that this legislation is being debated a week after it was announced means that, already, some rogue landlords will have spotted their opportunity to hike up rents and turf out tenants.
“Things are getting worse and not better. Labour has tabled amendments to the Government legislation on RPZ that would:
- Introduce a rent freeze;
- Ban no fault evictions;
- Provide fines of up to €100,000 for landlords breaking the law.
“Unlike this Government’s housing policy, these measures are evidence based and implementable. They are no silver bullet but they would provide some degree of certainty and assurances to the thousands of renters who are petrified of losing the roof over their head as a result of Minister Browne’s policy making in the headlines.
“For 10 years, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have prioritised the needs of big business over ordinary working people. It’s gone on too long. The housing crisis demands radical action, not more of the same. It’s time to end Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil’s ideological warfare against renters.”
