Labour calls for action for housing in Cork - The Labour Party

  • Kenny urges attendance at All Out for Housing on Saturday at 2pm in Cork
  • Average rent in Cork city €2,213 per month

Labour Cork North Central TD Eoghan Kenny has called on people young and old to turn out at 2pm this Saturday (21st June) at the National Monument in Cork for the All Out for Housing rally.

Speaking following the Raise the Roof rally in Dublin, Deputy Kenny said:

“The debates in the Dáil this week make it abundantly clear – Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil simple do not understand renters. The haphazard changes to the Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) rules are welcome, but Labour have called for this measure for years.

“Last night, the Labour Party published emergency amendments to the Government legislation which would introduce a two-year rent freeze, a ban on no fault evictions and hefty fines for any landlord in breach of the RPZ rules.

“There has been no joined-up thinking when it comes to protecting renters. Even when announcing the proposals last week, the Junior Minister didn’t know what the senior Minister had announced, and the Taoiseach didn’t know what had been issued to the press regarding the impact of the measures.

“During the week of 21-27 April of this year, 888 men, women and children were depending on emergency accommodation in Cork and Kerry, 193 of whom were children. We know that it is people squeezed out of the private rental sector who are most vulnerable to entering homelessness. It’s a national scandal. I’m asking everyone, young and old, to join the Labour Party in Cork on Saturday as we go All Out for Housing.”
