Bacik Campaigns to Save Rathmines Post Office - The Labour Party
- Protest to take place tomorrow, Saturday 21st June, at 11:30am
- Once cleared of the iconic 1930s building, An Post intends to sell
- Calls on Minister O’Donovan to intervene
Labour leader and Dublin Bay South TD Ivana Bacik has said that the Rathmines Post Office must be saved.
Speaking in advance of a demonstration planned for Saturday, 21st June, at 11:30am outside Rathmines Post Office, Deputy Bacik said that the hollowing out of community services across the country must be halted.
Deputy Bacik said:
“Rathmines has a population equivalent to Drogheda, but as a community is lacking in the provision of social services. The Citizens Information Centre and Community Partnership only recently closed their services in Rathmines, and losing the iconic 1930s An Post building from public service would represent a further diminishing of public and face-to-face services for the community.
“The Minister for Communications Patrick O’Donovan and the Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers must consent to and sign off on any disposal of land, buildings or other material assets by An Post. I am therefore calling on both Ministers to give the Rathmines community their word that they will not sign off on the sale of the building, and that they will work with local representatives and residents to find a way to keep the building in community or civic use.
“It’s so important that an area as diverse as Rathmines has access to high quality public services like the Post Office. It is a critical resource for pensioners, social welfare recipients, parcel collections and returns, bin tag purchases and more.
“Tomorrow at 11:30am, we will join with local activists and users of the service to demonstrate against the proposed moving of the service and subsequent sale of the building. I urge all those who share our concerns to join us. Ní neart go cur le chéile. We must keep up our efforts to save our services, and to protect our public amenities that belong to our community. “
