Dangerous escalation in Iran brings the world closer to all out war - The Labour Party
- EU Foreign Affairs meeting tomorrow cannot lose sight of innocents in Gaza
Labour’s foreign affairs spokesperson Duncan Smith TD has expressed his grave concern following US strikes on Iran overnight.
Deputy Smith said:
“Trump has brought the world closer to all out war overnight. Strikes on Iran represent a dangerous escalation which only serve to make the world less safe and less certain.
“Ensuring Iran cannot develop a nuclear weapons capability should only be done through negotiation, the strong application of the IAEA inspections, and the broader Non-Proliferation regime.
“Unfortunately, Trump pulled out of the treaty Obama negotiated with Iran on enrichment, and his bombing of Iran when they pose no immediate threat is just a further example of the authoritarian nature of the Trump administration.
“Israel’s original strike on Iran represented an attempt to further galvanise allies, and all the while, the horrors in Gaza continue. Men, women and children continue to be targeted at aid distribution centres, with estimates suggesting that at least 300 Palestinians have been killed for the ‘crime’ of attempting to reach aid.
“Tomorrow, there is an EU Foreign Affairs meeting to discuss the Israel trade agreement. While talks must focus on deescalation in the Middle East, we simply cannot lose sight of the innocent people in Gaza who continue to suffer at the hands of Israel.”
